Introduction to Web Development Technologies

Course 1912: 5 days; Instructor-Led

Introduction

The goal of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop Web applications by using Web development tools and technologies such as HTML, Microsoft ® FrontPage® 2000, Microsoft Visual Basic® Scripting Edition, Microsoft ActiveX®, and Active Server Pages (ASP).

Audience

This course is intended for people who want to develop dynamic and professional-looking business Web sites. Ability to write macros or computer code is not assumed, but would be very helpful.

At Course Completion

At the end of the course, students will be able to create an interactive Web page.

Microsoft Certified Professional Exams

There is no MCP exam associated with this course.

Prerequisites

  • Basic knowledge of HTML
  • Some experience in developing Web pages
  • Basic programming experience

Module 1: Internet Concepts

The following topics are covered in this module:

  • Introduction to the Internet
  • Architecture of the Internet
  • Connecting to the Internet
  • Services Available on the Internet
  • Electronic Commerce
  • Web Development Tools and Technologies

At the end of this module, you will be able to describe the Internet services and technologies.

Module 2: Using a Web Browser

The following topics are covered in this module:

  • Features for Developers
  • Configuring Internet Explorer 5
  • Downloading Files Using FTP
  • Comparing Available Web Browsers

At the end of this module, you will be able to identify the features of Internet Explorer 5 and also compare some of the commonly used Internet browsers. This includes:

  • Downloading files by using File Transfer Protocol (FTP).

Module 3: Basic HTML

The following topics are covered in this module:

  • Web Page Design Considerations
  • Creating a Web Page
  • Adding Images to a Web Page
  • Creating Tables
  • Formatting Tables

At the end of this module, you will be able to design and create a simple Web page by using basic HTML tags. This includes:

  • Creating a Web page by using basic HTML tags and FrontPage 2000.
  • Adding images to a Web page by using HTML and FrontPage 2000.
  • Creating tables by using HTML and FrontPage 2000.

Module 4: Advanced HTML

The following topics are covered in this module:

  • Creating Frames Using HTML
  • Creating Frames Using FrontPage 2000
  • Creating Forms Using HTML
  • Formatting Forms
  • Creating Forms Using FrontPage 2000
  • Introducing Style Sheets
  • Using Style Sheets
  • Publishing a Web Page

At the end of this module, you will be able to create and publish a Web site that uses frames, forms, and style sheets. This includes:

  • Creating frames by using HTML and FrontPage 2000.
  • Creating forms by using HTML and FrontPage 2000.
  • Creating style sheets by using HTML.
  • Publishing a Web page by using FrontPage 2000.

Module 5: Using Server-Side Scripts

The following topics are covered in this module:

  • Introduction to Active Server Pages (ASP)
  • Object Oriented Programming (OOP) Concepts
  • ASP Objects
  • Programming in ASP

At the end of this module, you will be able to process the information on a Web site by using ASP. This includes:

  • Executing ASP code in Internet Information Services (IIS).
  • Use ASP objects to capture form information and handle server functions.
  • Use ASP to process form information.

Module 6: Using Client-Side Scripts

The following topics are covered in this module:

  • Client-Side vs. Server-Side Scripting
  • Client-Side and Server-Side Objects
  • Introducing Client-Side Scripting
  • Using Dynamic HTML
  • Using Event Procedures
  • Using the Document Object Model (DOM)
  • Validating Form Inputs

At the end of this module, you will be able to add special effects to your Web page by using client-side scripting. This includes:

  • Writing a client-side script by using VBScript.
  • Using dynamic HTML to add effects to a Web page.
  • Using Microsoft Script Editor.
  • Changing the style of an element dynamically by using Microsoft Script Editor.
  • Using the Document Object Model (DOM).
  • Validating form inputs by using VBScript.

Module 7: Adding Active Components

The following topics are covered in this module:

  • Introduction to Active Components
  • List of ActiveX Controls
  • Working with ActiveX Controls
  • ActiveX Control Security
  • Other Active Components

At the end of this module, you will be able to add special effect to your Web page by using ActiveX controls. This includes:

  • Add an ActiveX control to a Web page by using FrontPage 2000.
  • Describe how Internet Component Download functions.
  • Identify the tools available for building ActiveX controls.
  • Send data from an ActiveX control to a server.
  • Differentiate between ActiveX controls and Java applets.

Module 8: Accessing a Database

The following topics are covered in this module:

  • Accessing Data From a Text File Using Tabular Data Control
  • Accessing Data From an XML Document
  • Database Access Interfaces
  • Processing Forms

At the end of this module, you will be able to retrieve data from a database by using ASP. This includes:

  • Accessing data from a text file by using the Tabular Data Control (TDC).
  • Navigating through records by using the methods of TDC.
  • Accessing data from an Extensible Markup Language (XML) document.
  • Creating a data source name.
  • Accessing a database by using the Database Results Wizard in FrontPage 2000.
  • Connecting to a data source by using Active Data Objects (ADO).
  • Processing input form information by using Active Server Pages (ASP).

Module 9: Building Sample Sites

This module does not have any topics. This module includes high-level exercises that help students to practice the skills that they learned in the course.

At the end of this module, you will be able to design and build a Web site that implements the concepts learned in this course.
